The Environmental Impact of Custom Woodworking

Over the years I have grown to take a larger and larger interest in the direct and indirect effects of me existing on this planet. My woodwork has similarly evolved to encompass these factors:

* I have access to conventional lumber but also Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood and local sources such as fallen or cleared trees that would otherwise go into landfills.

* I use low-VOC or no-VOC stains, finishes and paints

* I power my workshop and my house with a 5,000 Watt solar panel system that covers nearly all of my electricity needs.  I expect my yearly electric bill to be under $100.

* I use B99 biodiesel fuel, derived from soybeans, in my Volkswagen and get 49 mpg.  My compact pickup truck has a conventional gasoline engine but I’m exploring alternative fuel or fully electric options.
